Bears Reportedly Get Clarity on Future of Vic Fangio

Bears Officially Announce Helfrich Tabor Hires

He has 20 years of experience at the college level but will coach in the National Football League for the first time.

New Bears coach Matt Nagy hinted during his introduction Tuesday that his coaching staff would be unique.

Helfrich led OR to a 37-16 record in four seasons. Helfrich led OR to a 37-16 record in four seasons as head coach. Helfrich served as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at OR from 2009 to 2012 so he will bring an interesting dynamic to Halas Hall. The Bears hired Notre Dame's Harry Hiestand as offensive line coach.

Before posting a 37-16 overall record at OR, which included guiding the Ducks to a Pac-12 championship and an appearance in the national championship game in 2014, Helfrich was Kelly's offensive coordinator. However, he finished 4-8 in 2016 and was dismissed. The Bears were 5-11 in 2017.

They fired Fox after three seasons with a 14-34 record that gave him the second-worst winning percentage for a Chicago coach. Nagy spent the past decade working under Andy Reid in Philadelphia and Kansas City, serving as the Chiefs' sole offensive coordinator this past season.

Helfrich should be particularly helpful for No. 2 overall pick Mitch Trubisky, who exclusively ran a spread in his 13 starts at North Carolina. But the Bears will need to acquire some playmaking receivers. It also figures to benefit running backs Jordan Howard and Tarik Cohen, whose roles often lost consistency under the watch of offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains last season.

He becomes the second coordinator to be hired after the Bears hired Chris Tabor as special teams coordinator on Wednesday. The Bears also have two former Ducks, Hroniss Grasu and Kyle Long, on the offensive line. He's worked in Chicago before, serving as a quality control coach and offensive assistant from 2007-'09.
