Bezos donates $33 million for 'dreamers' scholarship program

TheDream.US said in a statement that the Bezos' donation would pay for 1,000 scholarships for so-called "Dreamers" to attend college, and that it was the largest donation in the group's history.

In a statement announcing the donation, Bezos cited the story of his adopted father, who left Cuba as part of Operation Pedro Pan.

However, the White House and Congress are battling it out over the future of DACA that President Trump has been keen on its revocation. The money can be used at 70 partner colleges in 15 states, and 2,850 students are now enrolled in college through the program.

That Tweet started to bear fruit today with the announcement of a $33-million contribution to TheDream.US from Jeff and MacKenzie Bezos.

"With a lot of grit and determination - and the help of some remarkable organizations in DE - my dad became an outstanding citizen and he continues to give back to the country he feels blessed him in so many ways", Bezos said in a statement. "With a lot of grit and determination - and the help of some remarkable organizations in DE - my dad became an outstanding citizen, and he continues to give back to the country that he feels blessed him in so many ways". The nonprofit partners with more than 70 low-priced colleges in 15 states, and helps DACA recipients with financial aid, books and more.

According to the New York Times, Judge William Alsup of the Federal District Court in San Francisco said that the federal government must "maintain the DACA program on a nationwide basis" while President Donald Trump's decision to end the program is still being challenged legally.

But TheDream.US provides each participant with a total of $33,000 in scholarship funds over the course of four years, which helps pay for their tuition, books and fees.

The program is less than four years old so there are no graduation rates yet. We would invite anyone who questions the value of Dreamers to please come meet some of our students. Bezos is providing the 1,000 students with full scholarships. The Obama-era provided temporary legal protection to around 700,000 dreamers that were living in the United States.

Bezos donation is being made to TheDream.US, a nonprofit group founded by the former owner of the Washington Post, Don Graham. After Trump accused Bezos of buying the Washington Post "for purposes of keeping taxes down at his no profit company", Bezos responded by offering to send Trump into space.
