N.Korea denies WannaCry cyberattack involvement

While the dictatorship's high-profile missile and nuclear programmes grab the headlines North Korea watchers have warned its legion of 6,000 hackers could be far more dangerous to global security

Of course North Korea denying everything is nothing new.

North Korea denied all involvement in cyber attacks in state media on Thursday, following recent US claims that the DPRK was culpable for the WannaCry ransomware attack earlier this year. Foreign Office Minister Lord Ahmad said in a statement that, "The UK's National Cyber Security Centre assesses it is highly likely that North Korean actors known as the Lazarus Group were behind the WannaCry ransomware campaign - one of the most significant to hit the UK in terms of scale and disruption".

It is not unusual for Pyongyang to issue harsh rhetoric against Washington and South Korea.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert announced that Pyongyang will be held accountable for the massive WannaCry cyberattack that occurred in May of this year.

American tech giants Microsoft and Facebook recently acted on their own to disrupt the activities of North Korean hackers and prevent the operational execution of ongoing cyberattacks in the USA, the White House said.

"And if they don't, this President is going to act on behalf of the United States and its national security interests, and not the national security interests of another country".

A spokesman for Pyongyang's foreign ministry said the U.S. allegations were "absurd", adding: "As we have clearly stated on several occasions, we have nothing to do with the cyberattacks".

The WannaCry attack crippled hospitals, banks and companies around the world, and "highlights the capabilities that North Korea has in cyber", Kurtz said.

A bevy of researchers, including those from Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab and US -based Symantec, however, quickly developed a forensic case against the North Korean state hacking team Lazarus Group soon after WannaCry's release.

The ransomware would infect your computer, encrypting the contents on the computer and requiring a ransom, paid in bitcoin, in order to decrypt it. Removing Kim's regime from power could cost hundreds of thousands of lives.

Video: Why was the WannaCry ransomware attack so widespread?

"This was a reckless attack; it was meant to cause havoc and destruction".

"We do not make this allegation lightly", Bossert said. Bossert said Trump had used "just about every lever you can use, short of starving the people of North Korea to death, to change their behaviour".
