Twitter found another 1062 accounts linked to Russian agency

Rep. Matt Gaetz right

"68 in 22 days... have no words #KeithLamontScott", read one example tweet from an Internet Research Agency account with the now suspended handle @Crystal1Johnson.

In addition to them being taken down, Twitter also said it will send email notifications to 677,775 people in the USA that interacted with any of these accounts either by following, retweeting or liking a post during the campaign.

Twitter, of course, isn't the only social media giant still grappling with the 2016 election.

Twitter also said on Friday it was investing in technology to help "detect and mitigate the effect on users of fake, coordinated, and automated account activity".

Twitter says all of the Russian propaganda accounts have since been deleted, though it posted a few samples on its blog that the company said "received significant engagement". That's nearly 1 percent of Twitter's 69 million monthly active users in the U.S. The new IRA accounts are in addition to 2,752 accounts Twitter found and disclosed previous year.

In total, Twitter believes there were 3,814 unique accounts run by the IRA. Twitter will limit the coordination abilities of the API, revamp its developer onboarding process with a focus on policy enforcement, and enforce rules on the appropriate use of bots and automation.

Twitter added that because it has already suspended these accounts, the relevant content is no longer publicly available on its platform.

That brought the total number of such Russian Twitter accounts to 3,814.

As if to demonstrate the different scales at work here, the Twitter blog post then changed topics to its efforts to block bots and suspicious activity platform-wide.

In the past few months, technology giants have faced increased pressure from U.S. and United Kingdom governments, and others, to work on curbing terrorist and extremist content online. Unlike Twitter, Facebook has not announced plans to inform users directly.

Twitter has provided updated details on its investigation into Russian election interference on its platform in 2016. Twitter said that in preparation for the 2018 midterm elections it would verify major party candidates for all statewide and federal offices, with open "lines of communication" to federal and state officials.

The company also said it had also found more than 50,000 Russian-linked automated accounts that tweeted about the presidential election.
