UFC 220: Daniel Cormier stops Volkan Oezdemir, retains UFC light heavyweight champion

Miocic defeated Francis Ngannou in the main event at UFC 220 in Boston.

By the time their heavyweight bout reached the fifth round, Miocic and Ngannou huffed, puffed and trudged around the cage without a knockout in sight.

The main event witnessed perhaps the most exciting opening round in UFC heavyweight championship history, with both Stipe Miocic and Francis Ngannou landing big shots and the champion landing three takedowns. Lewis even went on record by stating that he wanted to be next if Ngannou beat Miocic at UFC 220.

As the fight got underway, Miocic was very cautious to avoid the big bombs coming from Ngannou, who came storming out of the gates like usual as he threw every shot looking to land the knockout.

Despite the dominant win, Miocic still paid tribute to Ngannou for being a tough opponent and forcing him to be the best he's ever been to win this fight over five rounds. It was the first time Miocic went five rounds in a title fight, and only the third time in his career that he had gone past the fourth. He took Oezdemir down in the final 20 seconds and quickly got his back.

Miocic looked the much fresher fighter coming into the second round and he used his footwork to pick away with his jab at range. Miocic landed some hard shots on the ground, but chose not to attempt any submissions and instead continued wearing Ngannou down en route to the decision win.

Ngannou, a Cameroon native who this week criticised President Donald Trump for his profane description of African countries, never found that reserve power.

"I think I underestimated (him) a little bit", said Ngannou, whose rise from homeless to heavyweight contender captivated a sport eager for a new star.

Undisputed UFC heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic overcame the formidable challenge of Francis Ngannou to cement his position as the most successful champion in UFC heavyweight history, then announced he's going to be a father.

Miocic could lay claim as UFC's greatest heavyweight.

Alhassan: "This feels fantastic because I couldn't even celebrate after the first fight".

"I do [believe I'm the greatest of all time]", Miocic said.

The two loses on the record of Daniel Cormier are to one man: Jon Jones. But Cormier pinned Oezdemir against the canvas early in the second and finished him off with a series of punches to the face.

BOSTON The last time the Ultimate Fighting Championship came to the northeast, there were plenty of title changes to be had. He dropped to his knees on the canvas and said this fight was the validation he needed to prove he was worthy of being called champion.

The crowd showed their appreciation for both fighters with a standing ovation at the final bell, but the victor was clear as day.

He was right, as he made Oezdemir look second-rate. Left hand for Oezdemir. Nurmagomedov is set to fight Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title at UFC 223 in NY.
