SGMC observes Heart Health Month

SGMC is partnering with the American Heart Association's Go Red for Women campaign and encouraging everyone to wear red Friday, Feb. 2, National Wear Red Day, to raise awareness of women and heart disease, according to a SGMC press release. Volunteers with the organization say their ultimate goal is to let people know about the silent killer.

With two-thirds of clinical research focused on men, heart disease has become the leading cause of premature death for women in Canada and is five times more deadly than breast cancer. In Florence at the McLeod Medical Plaza, the guest speaker on "Women & Heart Disease" will be Dr. Brian Wall with McLeod Cardiology Associates. Here are a few ways you can "Go Red" this February.

If you're not familiar, Go Red for Women is a movement used to highlight the fact that heart disease is still a women's number one killer.

City of Union Mayor Harold Thompson will present the city's National Wear Red Day proclamation.

· Have a family history of heart disease. The program aims to raise awareness about heart health and congenital heart defects. Additional support is provided by St. Mary's Medical Center and Ebenezer Medical Outreach. In addition to spreading awareness, National Wear Red day is a means of raising funds for AHA.

Fortunately, that can be changed because 80% of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action. "That's an average of one death every forty seconds", said Jessica DiMeo, the Senior Regional Director of Communications at the American Heart Association.

Myth 2: Heart disease only impacts older people Heart disease affects women of all ages.

Eighty percent of heart disease may be prevented if they make the right choices for their hearts, involving diet, exercise and abstinence from smoking.
