Cellphone radiation poses no real harm to humans, new research says

"In the NTP rat study there was a significant increase in incidence of schwannomas of the heart in the animals exposed to radiofrequency radiation, with a dose-response relationship in male rats, as well as the occurrence of gliomas of the brain, though this increase was not statistically significant". And so far, we have not seen a higher cancer risk in people. In real life, humans are exposed to cellphone radiation at a rate that is "very, very, very much lower than what we studied".

Now, reports released by the US Department of Health and Human Services' National Toxicology Program add to the cell phone conundrum.

The vermin's entire bodies were blasted with way higher levels of the radiation than is allowed for cell phone communication, however, so the scientists warned against drawing links to Snapchat-addicted humans.

The concern with this type of radiation is that it produces energy in the form of heat, and frequent exposure against the skin could alter brain cell activity, as some studies have suggested. Further, although these were large and well-conducted animal studies, the relative rarity of the tumors showing an increase in incidence means that it may be hard to demonstrate significant increases in incidence which may be seen in the very much larger numbers of humans exposed to radiofrequency radiation. While the United States has transitioned to 4G, 4G-LTE and 5G networks in recent years, the 2G and 3G frequencies are still used in voice calls and texting. Both newborn rats and their mothers had reduced weight but grew to normal sizes, and exposed rats lived longer than those that hadn't.

High exposure to the type of radiofrequency radiation emitted by mobile phones has been linked to tumours in the hearts of male rats, but not female rats or any mice, according to a draft of USA government studies.

The new reports are still considered drafts, and the NTP plans to have outside experts review them next month.

The threat that radiation from wireless devices could be a public health risk only mounts with today's report from the NTP.

The results, he says have not led him to change his own cellphone use or to urge his own family to do so. Therefore, the results may not be applied directly to humans, according to John Bucher, a senior scientist at the National Toxicology Program.

Most scientists aren't swayed either way by these studies. In 2011, the World Health Organization's International Agency for Research on Cancer declared the kind of radiation emitted by cellphones as a "possible carcinogen" based on human epidemiological studies that found increased gliomas and acoustic neuromas in long-term cellphone users.

Some health and environmental groups immediately seized on the findings as more evidence of the dangers of cellphones.

Dr. Jeffrey Shuren, director of the F.D.A.'s center for devices and radiological health, said, "Even with frequent daily use by the vast majority of adults, we have not seen an increase in events like brain tumors". The new studies, when combined with previous research, have "given us the confidence that the current safety limits for cellphone radiation remain acceptable for protecting the public health".
