Google is working on a console and game streaming service

Phil Harrison on Twitter:

Google could also launch a gaming console under its Made by Google department, sources familiar with the matter told the news site. According to business mag The Information, the service is now codenamed Yeti, and could potentially either work through Chromecast or a new Google-developed piece of hardware.

Since the rise and fall of Onlive, many other companies have tried to tackle video game cloud streaming.

As explained by The Information, Yeti is a streaming service that will allow players to stream games from the cloud rather than downloading them to a hard drive first.

The Made by Google console would heighten Google's push for centering its products in consumers' homes. However, two services that have endured is GeForce Now from NVIDIA and PlayStation Now from Sony.

(Both of those platforms have more robust libraries of TV-centric games than Google.) So instead of an Android-focused service, "Yeti" could be a play for a more serious chunk of the gaming audience looking for a low-cost, low-effort streaming solution for playing games on a TV, but that might require courting developers to make specific titles for the platform. The company has tested several versions of the tech so far and is said to be targeting "top tier" gaming developers.

While everything seems a bit tentative, Google recently hired former PlayStation and Xbox exec Phil Harrison, so there may some truth behind the report.

We've reached out to Google for a comment on the existence of the games console and will update this article when we hear back. Following all of its current projects, Google's next venture could be in the world of video games. Harrison also worked for Microsoft Corp's Xbox group for three years.

While leveraging Android titles offers a huge ready-made gaming universe, the report says Google is looking to strike exclusive deals with developers for the new cloud service.
