Eurostar To Start Offering Direct Trips Between London And Amsterdam

Eurostar confirms April launch date for London-Amsterdam

Customers will need to take a Thalys train to Brussels-Midi/Zuid, where they will go through security and passport control before hopping on a Eurostar train to London.

The launch of the London to Amsterdam service marks a historic milestone in the expansion of global high speed rail travel, revolutionising the connection between these important destinations.

Eurostar says the non-direct return journey is a temporary measure while the British and Dutch governments complete an agreement to enable passport and security checks to be carried out upon departure from the Netherlands. Train manufacturer Siemens and Dutch train company NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) are conducting tests on the service that will make the connection between Amsterdam, Brussels and London.

"Our new route marks the culmination of the extensive investment in high speed rail on both sides of the Channel", says Eurostar chief executive Mr Nicolas Petrovic.

This week travelers in Europe were given an update on the previously announced round-trip train service between London and Amsterdam.

The new service will be launched with two trains a day departing from Lodon's St Pancras International to Amsterdam's Centraal Station at 08.31 and 17.31.

It points out that since then, the market for travel between London and Paris has more than doubled.

The service will run twice a day from London, at 8:31am and 5:31pm. This is a temporary measure while the governments of the Netherlands and United Kingdom are working on an agreement which will allow passport controls to be done in the Netherlands. For the journey, ticket prices will start at £35 one-way.

These issues mean direct services returning to London will not be in place until the end of next year. The company has captured more than 70 percent of the combined London-Paris air and train market, though journey times to the French capital are significantly shorter at two hours 15 minutes.
