United Kingdom ex-soccer coach convicted of 43 child sex abuse charges

Bennell was a scout for Manchester City in the 1980s and a youth coach at Crewe Alexandra, roles that gave him unfettered access to hundreds of schoolboy footballers who dreamed of careers in the professional game.

Bennell had already been found guilty on 36 charges on Tuesday, bringing the number of convictions from the trial to 43.

Paedophile football coach Barry Bennell may have assaulted more than 100 boys during his reign of abuse, it can now be reported, after his latest trial came to an end.

A cheer of "yes" came from the public gallery where six complainants sat with family members as the final verdicts were read out and some people were in tears.

"For decades we lived in fear".

Bennell, 64, was found guilty of indecent assault, buggery and attempted buggery against 11 victims - all boys aged between eight and 15 - in a complex trial in Liverpool in northwest England.

Warren, who has been coaching football for four years, explained how coaches can never be left on their own with a child after training, when waiting for their parents to arrive.

They were abused at Bennell's home - described by one complainant as a "paradise" for young boys, with a pool table, fruit machine, big televisions and unusual pets - as well as on the way to matches and in changing rooms.

Mr Grimsley, a youth team coach, and the family of chief scout and ex-player Mr Barnes, who died in 2010, have said they were unaware of any abuse. I knew if I said those words I'd have to get my head in a space that took me back to that football club.

The case has sparked wider allegations of sexual and physical abuse of boys at football clubs in Britain in the 1970s and 1980s, some of whom went on to become heroes of the terraces and global stars.

"How can it be that no one realised something was wrong?" he asked.

Crewe Alexandra put out a statement expressing its "deepest sympathies" to Bennell's victims. The club said it was not aware of any sexual abuse by Bennell and only became aware of any offences committed by him when he was arrested in the United States in 1994. How was it that no one protected us?

Another person with "potential historic connections" to Manchester City has been linked with serious allegations of child sex abuse, the club has said.

Det Insp Sarah Oliver, who led the investigation, said Bennell had betrayed the trust of young players.

Man City offered its "heartfelt sympathy to all victims for the unimaginably traumatic experiences they have endured".
