Thank George and Abe for day of leisure

Abraham Lincoln

Although commonly known as Presidents Day, the Monday holiday is still legally Washington's Birthday.

Since 1971, federal employees and school children have enjoyed a three-day holiday weekend each February.

Incidentally, the third Monday in February can never fall on the 22nd, meaning the federal holiday will never land on Washington's actual birth date. And my Webster's New World College Dictionary, Fourth Edition, has an entry for Presidents' Day. That date always falls in between Abraham Lincoln's birthday of February 12 and Washington's-and can never fall on the February 22. Both federal and provincial governments have declared the day as an official holiday.

However, comments in news media and social networks said this year the date was an opportune moment to refer to 44 of the 45 presidents and exclude the present head of the White House, Donald Trump.

To many Americans, Presidents' Day means retail sales and discounts or even a day off, if they're lucky. If you look at the California DMV's website, however, you'll get a message that its offices are closed on President's Day.

Only Alabama officially sets aside the day to honor Washington and Jefferson. While Washington is alone in being named after a president, it is not in celebrating presidential legacies; most states since have joined celebration of two of our nation's most influential leaders. Arkansas, for instance, celebrates Washington as well as civil rights activist Daisy Gatson Bates.

Like Independence Day, Presidents' Day is traditionally viewed as a time of patriotic celebration and remembrance.

It seems nobody wants George Washington to have a birthday anymore.
