Turkish, Free Syrian Army forces free village in Afrin

UN report on Afrin contradicted by facts on ground

The operation "Olive Branch" was launched on January 20 to clear PYD/PKK and IS terrorists from Afrin in northwestern Syria, the Anadolu news agency reported.

The Turkish General Staff said in a statement on February 18 that a total of 1,614 militants have been "neutralized" since the start of "Operation Olive Branch" in the northwestern Syrian district of Afrin, Hurriyet Daily News reports.

The source also described the accusations of wounding six civilians through a suspected gas attack as "black propaganda".

Birusk Hasaka, a spokesman for the Kurdish YPG militia in Afrin, told Reuters that Turkish bombardment hit a village in the northwest of the region, near the Turkish border.

According to the Director of the hospital, the ambulance took six people with symptoms of poisoning with chemical weapons.

Both SANA and the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights quoted local doctors in their reports.

If the Syrian regime deems itself landlord of this territory, it must close Syria's airspace for Turkish planes and fulfill its commitments with regard to defending Afrin, which is part of the Syrian state.

The official acknowledged reports about an alleged toxic gas attack in Syria on Friday, reported AP.

Combat has continued in the region despite calls this month by the United Nations for a humanitarian cease-fire.

Although Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government and the YPG have mostly avoided direct conflict, they have occasionally clashed and they espouse utterly different visions for Syria's future. Turkey sees the YPG as terrorists and an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) that has waged a three-decade insurgency on Turkish soil.
