Israel's Netanyahu attacks 'dangerous Iranian tiger'

Israeli police find 'sufficient evidence' to indict Netanyahu

Regarding the threat in his speech to "act against Iran itself" and not just its proxies, Netanyahu said: "I didn't say what we will attack, but one thing is for sure - Iran is attacking Israel, without a doubt, and so they have no immunity". Iran is not Nazi Germany and there are many differences between the regimes, but there are also many similarities: Iran has repeatedly said it wants to destroy Israel and is threatening the world with violence.

Iran's foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, called the presentation "a cartoonish circus, which does not even deserve a response". "You should, it's yours". One of those planes, an F-16 fighter jet, was shot down by the Syria forces on return from that mission.

Israel's response marked the first time it publicly acknowledged hitting Iranian targets in Syria since the 2011 start of the war there.

During his address, Zarif said the downing of the Israeli jet last week shattered Israel's "so-called invincibility". Israel claimed that it had launched those assaults after it intercepted an "Iranian drone" launched from Syria, an accusation rejected by Tehran as "ridiculous".

Netanyahu held up a piece of metal that he claimed came from an Iranian drone which Israel shot down after it allegedly penetrated Israeli airspace.

In Syria, the Iran-backed Lebanese militia Hezbollah has played a pivotal role in supporting the regime of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, all but ensuring his victory.

"They like Israel, but they need Iran", Amos Gilad, who recently stepped down as director of political-military affairs at Israel's defence Ministry, said in an interview.

But Mr Netanyahu said Iran was increasing its power as a US-led coalition against the Islamic State group in Iraq and Syria was regaining territory from militants.

It was the largest battery of Israeli strikes on Syria since 1982, during Lebanon's civil war.

"We are completely prepared to defend our land", he stressed during a meeting with Arab League chief Ahmed Abul Gheit on the margins of the Munich Security Conference.

But Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel would not let Iran obtain a permanent foothold in its northern neighbour.

Former U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry says it is "absolutely critical" to make sure that world powers' nuclear agreement with Iran survives.

A few hours later, Mr Zarif also spoke to the Munich conference and dismissed the words of the Israeli leader.

He deflected a question about whether Iran could recognise Israel, accusing Israel of using "aggression as a policy against its neighbours" and the Palestinians, and saying it was "trying to escape responsibility for its criminal policies".
