Remember the net neutrality repeal? It will go into effect April 23rd

FCC Eliminates Hard-Copy Rules Requirement

Proponents of net neutrality protest against Federal Communication Commission Chairman Ajit Pai outside the American Enterprise Institute before his arrival May 5, 2017 in Washington, DC.

The Open Internet Order, enacted by President Barack Obama in 2015, barred internet service providers from throttling service speeds or creating preferred access lanes online.

Now it's up to Congress to see if anything can be done to save Net Neutrality.

"Consumers and businesses in NY and across the country have the right to a free and open internet, and our coalition of attorneys general won't stop fighting to protect that right", he said. The loss of net neutrality could greatly impact online-based education, such as colleges that rely greatly on lecture videos and videoconferencing.

Technology news website TechCrunch reported that a number of lawsuits are challenging the FCC decision and some states have passed or will pass net neutrality laws in their own jurisdictions. It also began allowing broadband providers to charge content companies more money to move data faster, which the Democratic-controlled FCC had banned.

At the top of Net-neutrality supporters' wish list: passage of a Congressional Review Act measure to reinstate the original rules. One of the things that will happen, reports TechCrunch, is that Democrats in the Senate and House will be able to force a vote on blocking the order. By our count, 114 representatives have made public commitments in support of voting for a CRA action.

Finally, the legislatures in more than half of all states are considering legislation that would enforce net neutrality, according to the advocacy group Free Press. Congress has exclusive authority to regulate interstate commerce, which is the basis of the FCC's legal argument. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) and Angus King (Maine) and Republican Susan Collins (Maine).

Blumenthal said if they get the extra vote the Senate needs, it would go onto the House. "We are confident that the FCC's illegal and procedurally flawed action will be rejected". Frank Pallone, D-N.J., in a statement.

"I will continue to fight aggressively to stop the FCC's blatant, un-American attack on a free and open internet".

An FCC spokesperson clarified that despite that April 23 effective date, nothing of substance takes effect until after the Federal Register publishes the OMB approval of the reporting requirements (assuming they are approved, as expected).

The repeal clears the way for ISPs and wireless carriers to treat internet traffic however they wish, for the most part. Plaintiffs in the litigation will ask courts to issue an injunction against the new rule taking effect.
