USA panel says it's OK to use nasal spray flu vaccine again

18 Flu Deaths in Delaware This Season

An official from AstraZeneca, the company that makes FluMist, said the problem with the vaccine has been identified and corrected.

Federal advisory committee recommends FluMist, the single needleless option for flu vaccine available in the medicine industry.

ACIP voted 12-2 to add FluMist back to the mix of flu vaccines that doctors and clinics can use. FluMist is known as live attenuated influenza vaccine or LAIV.

"For the 2018-19 season, immunization providers may choose to administer any licensed, age appropriate, influenza vaccine (including LAIV, IIV and RIV)".

As of last week, influenza has sent 3,550 people to the hospital in the state.

This wording puts FluMist on the "recommended" list, which means insurance companies have to pay for its use, without being a strong endorsement. And while these signals aren't as blatant as, say, neon billboards or vehicle signs, they're hard to miss - especially since they're usually accompanied by a sudden energy drain that has been likened many flu sufferers as getting hit by a Mack truck.

A map from the Centers for Disease Control shows Colorado's rating as high for number of flu cases. San Diego County informs the public about all flu deaths, according to county officials.

Professor Dr. Henry Bernstein from the Cohen Children's Medical Center, New York stated that, "I have real mixed emotions about this because I think we want to protect as many people as we can, particularly, as a pediatrician, for children".

During the committee discussion in the lead-up to the votes, some members said they anxious if the new data on shedding were strong enough evidence of protection, compared with traditional vaccine effectiveness studies.

It's been a severe flu season, but some areas across the country are reporting dwindling numbers including some NY counties. It's been off the US market since then, although it is still used in other countries, including Canada and the European Union. Out of those visits, 137 students came in with flu symptoms and 20 were confirmed cases.

The drug maker, AstraZeneca, released the results of a small study suggesting the reformulated vaccine performed significantly better than it did two years ago.

The predominant influenza strain circulating in San Diego and across the country this season is H3N2.

Health officials are urging people living with high-risk individuals - such as infant children, pregnant women, those with respiratory issues, and the elderly - to get vaccinated. Lentz said. "So you can see we've really gone up".

"With pediatric age groups when you get influenza their immune system will be weakened by the influenza virus and that will make them vulnerable to bacterial infections", said Dr. Shokr. For that reason, some kids, such as those with asthma, usually can not be administered FluMist, anyway.

- AstraZeneca Plc said on Wednesday an advisory committee of the U.S.
