Chiefs set to deal Peters to Rams

Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Marcus Peters signals to the bench that a penalty is against the Tennessee Titans during the first half of an NFL wild-card playoff game in Kansas City Mo. Saturday Jan. 6 2018

The Rams trading for Peters seems to indicate that Los Angeles will not re-sign cornerback Trumaine Johnson, a six-year veteran who has recorded 18 picks in his National Football League career.

Details of the trade have not been reported. All that is available is that it will be draft picks.

Peters was also seen at different times on the sideline last season shouting at defensive coordinator Bob Sutton or others. Peters returned without his helmets and socks because he thought he had been ejected from the game.

That game wrapped up a four-game losing streak for the Chiefs.

He also drew criticism this past year for not standing for the national anthem. The Chiefs will be trading the two-time Pro Bowler to the Rams barring any unforeseen setbacks, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

He was kicked off the team for his final year at Washington in college for repeatedly arguing with Huskies coaches. Now, it appears he has been traded. Johnson posted 193 tackles (162 solo), three fumble recoveries, one forced fumble, 10 interceptions and 41 passes defensed between 2015-17.

The Smith era in Kansas City is over, and they are going to be breaking in Patrick Mahomes next season along with a defense that will have many new faces, including Fuller and David Amerson at cornerback.

Though there were some quiet rumblings the past few weeks about Peters potentially being traded, the report still came as a surprise to many. But it's unknown whether those will occur in April's draft or in following years. The Rams do not own a 2018 second-round pick, having shipped that selection to Buffalo in the Sammy Watkins deal. The Kansas City Chiefs got rid of their best cornerback in a move for draft picks, signalling the end of a three-year run with the team that was a combination of excellent play, and three straight trips to the playoffs.
