Middlesex Hospital opens temporary emergency room space

Middlesex Hospital

On Thursday morning, a 27-year-old Middletown man intentionally crashed the auto he was driving through the sliding doors and into the vestibule, before setting himself on fire. O'Brien shows the immediate aftermath of the crash.

A vehicle slammed into Middlesex Hospital in Middletown and caught fire on Thursday morning. A fire crew then arrives at the scene and tried to extinguish the fire. He was flown to Bridgeport Hospital, where he was being treated last night in the burn unit.

Chief McKenna said Ellam had a lengthy criminal record and has been known to police since he was 14-years-old. A security guard was hospitalized for smoke inhalation while evacuating patients and staff, but officials said no other patient or staff injuries were reported.

Middlesex Hospital issued an alert on its website February 23 indicating the ER will remain closed and all nonemergency surgeries scheduled for February 23 will be canceled.

Ellam's motive was unclear at first, but Middletown Mayor Dan Drew has stated that he believes it was an isolated incident.

Drew said investigators were also looking into a home at 66 Milardo Ln.in Middletown and evacuated neighboring houses around it. In 2013 he was also found guilty of attempting to strangle someone.

The bomb squad and state and federal authorities were called in to help. Additional police officers were also dispatched to schools in Middletown as a matter of precaution. "I was in my room". "I rode my bike down to the hospital and it was surrounded by police and fire department officials...."

"I don't like giving negativity power, so I just thought, 'What?'" she said. The hospital said it is not allowing visitors, except for special circumstances.

By 4 p.m. Friday, Middlesex resumed emergency care to walk-in patients, opening a temporary emergency department space in its outpatient surgical services area, Middlesex Public Relations Director Amanda Falcone said.

This is a developing story, and it will be updated accordingly.
