NRA head Wayne La Pierre speaks at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Feb. 22

The exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to vehicle rental brands and a household moving company, began after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter US gun laws.

The growing exodus of corporate names, ranging from a major insurer to vehicle rental brands and a household moving company, comes after the NRA launched a counter-offensive against a student-led campaign for tighter U.S. gun ownership laws.

The National Rifle Association did not immediately comment on Saturday about the decisions by the various companies to sever ties.

Hashtags urging boycotts of specific companies involved in the deals have sprouted up across social media over the past several days. As part of their membership, NRA members receive discounts on things from renting cars to buying prescription drugs. The company, which provides cybersecurity solutions worldwide, had been offering discounts on Norton anti-virus and malware protection, cutting prices on its premium package from $110 to $48 for NRA members.

On Friday, Symantec Corp. announced in a terse statement on Twitter that it had also ended its discount program with the gun-rights organization. A home security company.

Wyndham Hotel Group said in a statement that it "ended our relationship with the NRA late a year ago". A cybersecurity firm. Six vehicle rental brands.

While a representative did not respond to Business Insider's follow-up questions about why Enterprise was ending the program, the announcement came after the company was flooded with boycott threats on social media. Hertz, Avis Budget Group and TrueCar would soon join Enterprise and end their NRA discounts.

The attrition of NRA corporate partners began on Thursday when three rental auto brands owned by Enterprise Holdings Inc said they were ending discount programs, and First National Bank of Omaha said it would not renew the NRA's contract to issue a co-branded Visa card.

"Customer feedback has caused us to review our relationship with the NRA", the bank said in a statement posted on Twitter.

The issue of gun control, and the NRA's role in opposing it, became the focus of renewed national debate on 14 February, when a former student killed 17 people at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, with an AR-15 assault rifle he had purchased legally. "Doing business with the NRA is clearly bad business".

Also, not every company has yielded to the boycott effort.

In 2012, activist group Avaaz organized a boycott calling for Best Western to cut ties with the NRA following the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Both Delta and United said Saturday they will no longer offer discounted fares to NRA members to attend their annual meetings, and both have asked the gun rights group to remove any references to their companies from the NRA website.

While Wyndham Hotels and Resorts previously offered a 10% discount to NRA members, the hotel chain cut ties with the organization in late 2017.

"To be affiliated with them, whether you are a company or a lawmaker, it is not going to pay off in the long run", said Watts, the group's founder, signaling the start of a broader campaign.
