Russia reinstated into Olympic fold

Russians win hockey gold with 4-3 OT win over Germany

'The restoration of the ROC was connected with the end of the doping tests from the Olympics in Pyeongchang, the International Olympic Committee can confirm that all other results are negative.

After a major doping scandal limited Russia's participation at the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, the country's Olympic committee has been formally reinstated by the International Olympic Committee.

Alexander Zhukov, president of the ROC, said: "The Russian Olympic Committee has had its rights fully restored".

All the remaining tests on the Olympic Athlete from Russia (OAR) team came back negative, the IOC said. The IOC confirmed the suspension had been lifted in a brief statement.

Russian officials and others had expressed hopes that the ban could be lifted before the closing ceremonies.

He organized the Russian system of doping before fleeing to the United States in 2016 and providing evidence of it to investigators from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the IOC. Today's IOC's decision is very important for us.

"The suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee is automatically lifted with immediate effect", an IOC spokesman told ESPN on Wednesday.

Russian Federation topped the medals table after the Games - but lost that position when athlete after athlete was disqualified following the retesting of samples.

The IOC decision to reinstate Russian Federation has no bearing on the International Paralympic Committee's earlier ruling to maintain the country's ban. As NPR's Bill Chappell has reported, their athletes could still compete - but under the title of "Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation".

He referred to members of the Russian ice hockey team performing the national anthem after receiving the Olympic gold, saying he would like to thank them for their patriotism.

The International Olympic Committee gave Russian Federation every opportunity to compete in Pyeongchang. Two OAR athletes failed drugs tests during the games and all 168 OAR competitors had been required to prove they were clean before being cleared to participate.
