State Department makes determination approving Javelin missile sale to UkrainePoltorak said the weapons would help the Ukrainian military respond to attacks that he said Russian Federation was responsible for coordinating.

The State Department has made a determination approving a possible Foreign Military Sale to Ukraine of Javelin Missiles and Javelin Command Launch Units (CLUs) for an estimated cost of $47 million.

USA government employees and contractors will help transport the weapons and train Ukraine's forces, who are fighting a Russian-backed insurgency in the east of the country, to use them.

Since Moscow's annexation of Crimea in 2014, Ukraine and Russia have been at loggerheads over a war in eastern Ukraine between pro-Russian separatists and Ukrainian government forces that has killed more than 10,000 people in three years.

Since the latter stages of the Obama administration, congressional defense authorizers have called on the United States to provide defensive lethal assistance to Ukraine. Joni Ernst said in a statement Thursday.

The United States has confirmed its decision to supply the Javelin anti-tank missile systems to Ukraine, thus opening the front of the global defense support of the Ukrainian state.

The prime contractor will be a joint venture of Raytheon Co and Lockheed Martin Corp, it added.

Implementation of this proposed sale will require U.S. Government and/or contractor representatives to travel to Ukraine temporarily in order to conduct training.
