Florida: gun control bill advances in Senate

The Latest Florida House debates school safety bill

It also calls for raising the age requirement for rifle and shotgun purchases to 21, an action voluntarily taken this week by national retailers like Dick's Sporting Goods and Walmart. Still, some districts in Texas and OH have already quietly started allowing teachers to carry concealed weapons to class, like this one profiled by the New York Times in February, which spends more than a quarter of a million dollars annually on safes, cameras, radios, and ammunition as part of the effort.

Gov. Rick Scott has invited all Floridians to join him for a moment of silence at 3 p.m. - 17 days after the shooting.

In the Senate, racial and privacy concerns have apparently shelved the bill in the Appropriations Committee.

In Mississippi, lawmakers proposed letting teachers and other school employees with special training carry guns onto campus.

Rep. Jackie Toledo, a Tampa Republican who is the primary sponsor of the House bill, said that "despite all the other important issues that we are dealing with, we came together and worked together in a bipartisan fashion to save lives".

The bill would leave it up to the discretion of individual school districts to decide whether they wanted to arm teachers or not.

In the all-day Senate session, lawmakers considered multiple measures aimed at reducing gun violence, including millions of dollars for school safety and improving mental health services, after the tragic shooting in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed.

"We know he can veto line items", she said.

The upcoming votes on the school safety packages has put many lawmakers, especially conservatives who have spent their political careers protecting gun rights, in a hard position.

The Senate was originally scheduled to wrap up discussion by 1 p.m., but extended the rare Saturday session to 9 p.m.

"There are huge differences between the House and the Senate and within the House and the Senate".

A final vote on the bill won't be held until Monday. "They are trying to find something that is in the middle, and it's hard".

The body then moved to other legislation on guns. Several speakers spoke in favor of the assault weapons ban, including Parkland resident Amber Hersh.

Coral Springs, Florida, Mayor Walter "Skip" Campbell said he is calling on mayors across the state to back a state constitutional amendment to ban assault weapons.

"It's the fear of having to run against somebody who has the endorsement of the NRA and being outflanked on the right", Gruters said.

Two out of three adults in the United States want stricter gun laws, CBS found in a poll conducted a week after the tragedy.

But he also rejected the notion that legislators were working to appease the interest groups.

"Since we're focusing on emotional readiness and comfort not curriculum, there's no need for backpacks this week", he said. "And the politics of it be damned".

For a moment, Florida lawmakers gave gun control a shot.
