Iran criticises France over missile programme stance

Aerial view of what is thought to be Iranian base in Israel

The US concerns about Iran's nuclear power stems from "their failures and defeats in the region", Jazayeri said.

Velayati said Iran will devise its defence policy independently, adding it can not remain indifferent to mass weapons purchases by governments in the region.

"You know that the Iranian people have good memories of the Japanese people, and Japan is an important country for Iran, and because of this, it has an important place", he said, referring to his former meetings with Japan's foreign minister and Shinzo Abe and other officials.

Ali Akbar Velayati, a top foreign policy adviser to the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, said on Saturday that Iran's defense program has nothing to do with any other country including France.

Le Drian should avoid adopting any negative position against Iran if Paris seeks to bolster relations with Tehran, said Velayati.

"The precondition for talks on Iran's missiles program is the dismantle of the USA and Europe's nuclear weapons and long-range missiles", Jazayeri stressed.

The US has repeatedly claimed that Iran's missile program is in violation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which endorses the JCPOA.

Iran's state-run IRNA news agency is reporting that a top military commander says Iran will negotiate over its missile program if the US and Europe dismantle their nuclear programs.

"The condition for negotiating Iran's missiles is the destruction of the nuclear weapons and long-range missiles of the United States and Europe", Iranian Armed Forces spokesman Masoud Jazayeri was quoted by the state news agency IRNA as saying.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in February that the worldwide community needs "to put Iran under surveillance over its ballistic missiles".
