Man apparently shoots himself near White House, Secret Service says

Gunman arrested for suicide attempt in front of White House

A man standing alone amid a crowd of more than 100 people fatally shot himself along the north fence line of the White House midday Saturday, according to the Secret Service. A report of "shots fired" near North Lawn, per a U.S. Secret Service agent.

The incident is said to have affected traffic around the White House.

The incident increased security at the White House, and reporters were temporarily sent down to the basement.

One video posted on Twitter showed hundreds of people sprinting away as sirens blared in the background and emergency vehicles sped toward the scene.

Washington DC Police said the man approached the White House's fence just before noon local time yesterday before taking out a handgun and firing several shots.

President Donald Trump is not at the White House as he is at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida. The Secret Service and Washington, D.C., Metropolitan Police Department are withholding the victim's name until his family is notified, a Secret Service release stated. Tensions were heightened because Mr. Trump was home at the time.

The White House was placed on lockdown, and the surrounding area was cordoned off. They are scheduled to return for a dinner in Washington on Saturday evening.
