Scott McTominay commits worldwide future to Scotland

Ibrahimovic has struggled to recover from a serious knee injury sustained in April 2017

Joey Barton has joked that Scott McTominay chose to represent Scotland over England because he "clearly wants summers off".

The 21-year-old was born in Lancaster but has Scottish ancestry through his grandparents. You want form players, and central midfield is probably not their strongest position.

"Who will I support in the World Cup qualifiers?"

While the choice will represent a practical one given the number of competitors McTominay would have been faced with had he opted for England, given the recent performances of young Scots like Kieran Tierney at Celtic, Andrew Robertson at Liverpool, Ryan Fraser at Bournemouth and Jason Cummings at Rangers, there certainly is potential for improvement.

"Maybe Man United and Fergie have influenced him?" He's a great guy, and he gets the best out of players. "It's a bit of both - I want them both to do well".

He has warned McTominay to expect a "very different" experience playing for Scotland, who have friendlies against Costa Rica on 23 March and Hungary on 27 March in McLeish's first games back in charge.

I know you don't really sign players for the worldwide team but England were interested in him, and it's fantastic he's chosen to play for Scotland.

He said: "Because it looks like England are missing him, if I was Alex McLeish, the first thing I would do would be to come to me".

The United manager added: "The kid is very "feet on the ground", he's very calm, so I think he passed some important tests not by the football point of view but the mental point of view - maturity, calm play against champions, play knockout in the Champions League, two tests by the mental approach".
