Another top Republican has announced he will resign from Congress

Senator Thad Cochran a Republican from Mississippi walks to a Senate Republicans meeting at the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. U.S. on Monday Jan. 22 2017. The Senate moved to end the U.S. government shutdown after three days by advancing a tempor

Republican U.S. Senator Thad Cochran, chairman of the powerful Appropriations Committee, said on Monday he will resign on April 1.

Cochran, now 80-years-old, has been suffering from health problems in recent months, causing him to miss several weeks in the Senate last fall while recuperating from a urinary tract infection. In a statement, Cochran said he intends to complete the appropriations cycle before retiring.

Whoever wins the special election in 2018 would have to run again in 2020 - if he or she chooses. Cochran's colleague, Sen. Roger Wicker (R-MI), is up for re-election this year and is facing a challenge by state Sen. "My top concern has always been my constituents in Mississippi", Cochran said in the statement.

News 25's Veronica Bayona spoke to Howie Morgan, a local political consultant, who tells us more about what this decision means for the state of Mississippi. In the coming days, the governor is expected to name an interim replacement for Cochran and set a special election for November 6 - the same day as other regularly scheduled elections, including the general election for the Wicker seat.

Bryant has not released names of people he will consider appointing, though there has been widespread speculation that he might appoint Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves or Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann, both Republicans. Roger Wicker. Two Democrats also qualified for that race - State Representative David Baria from Bay St. Louis and businessman Howard Sherman, husband of actress Sela Ward.

Cochran's temporary replacement will be chosen by Mississippi's governor.

Cochran was first elected to the Senate in 1978 after serving six years in the House.

Espy became Assistant State Attorney General from 1984 to 1985, when he was elected as a Democrat to the 100th Congress in 1986 from Mississippi's 2nd congressional district. And the people of Mississippi-and our whole nation-have benefited from his steady determination to do the latter. That race grabbed national attention after a McDaniel supporter entered a nursing home without permission and photographed Cochran's wife, Rose, who was bedridden with dementia. McDaniel said he had no connection to the incident.

McDaniel announced last week that he planned to run against Wicker in November. He fought relentlessly for MS from helping our farmers get their crops to market to fighting our citizens after Hurricane Katrina devastated much of the state.
