Forbes Unveils Its Richest People On The Planet List

The group's wealth totals $9.1 trillion, up 18 percent since a year ago, Forbes said Tuesday.

Bill Gates - Gates owes his $90 billion in net worth to Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT), which he founded back in 1975.

This year's list contains billionaires from 72 different countries and territories, with moguls from Zimbabwe and Hungary appearing on the ranking for the first time. His wealth has grown by over 8 billion dollars.

The list is published in Forbes's latest edition under the headline "The super-rich continue to get richer, widening the gap between them and everyone else".

Next up are investor Warren Buffett (No. 3, $84 billion), French investor and art collector Bernard Arnault (No. 4, $72 billion) and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (No. 5, $71 billion).

The world's richest self-made woman is Hong Kong's Zhou Qunfei, founder of smartphone screen maker Lens Technology.

President Donald Trump's net worth took another substantial hit over the last past year, dropping around $400 million since he took office, according to Forbes.

Forbes magazine is revealing its annual list of billionaires. His fortune is up from $US75.6bn a year earlier.

The business tycoon, with $3.1 billion is now ranked 766th this year, down from a 544th ranking last year. The magazine estimates his net worth at $3.1 billion, down from $3.5 billion past year.

The magazine attributed Trump's decline in wealth to "a tough NY real estate market, particularly for retail locations; a costly lawsuit and an expensive presidential campaign".

The magazine states the business tycoon's signature property, Trump Tower, fell in value by an estimated $US41 million ($52 million) past year, as a result of a rise in e-commerce.
