Nashville mayor who admitted affair with bodyguard expected to resign

Megan Barry, the Democratic mayor of Nashville, Tenn., is expected to announce her resignation on Tuesday after admitting earlier this year that she had an affair with her bodyguard.

"While my time as your mayor concludes today, my unwavering love and honest affection for this wonderful city and its great people shall never come to an end", Barry said in a statement.

On Tuesday, she pleaded guilty to theft of property over $10,000; Barry agreed to reimburse the city $11,000 and serve three years' probation, according to the newspaper.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation did not identify the woman in the photos and Barry has said that if the photos are of her, they were taken without her knowledge or permission.

In January, she acknowledged reports that she had been having an extramarital affair with her former bodyguard, Sgt. Robert Forrest, who retired the day Barry admitted to the affair.

The photos were discovered in Forrest's work email, the filings state.

Barry routinely traveled without security before June 2016, records show.

Barry was the subject of multiple investigations and the charges mark a stunning turn of events for the mayor, elected in September 2015 and seen as a rising star nationally and at the city-level for Democrats. However, Barry does not think she improperly misused taxpayer money, NPR reported. Barry said the affair began in spring 2016, according to an affidavit.

"I thank you in advance for the support I am sure you will give Mayor Briley in the weeks ahead", Barry said. The 54-year-old oversaw a business-friendly, socially-progressive agenda and was known for her accessibility. The Bureau found nude photos of a woman on Forrest's phone, though they did not say whether the woman in question was Barry. She would not say when the affair ended, only saying that it's over. "As the mayor of Music City, she always came to shows".

Also on Tuesday, the former head of Barry's security detail, Rob Forrest, pleaded guilty to theft of property over $10,0000. She was the point person for a $5.4 billion transit plan that Nashville voters will consider in a citywide referendum in May.

Forrest resigned from the Metro Nashville Police Department after Barry's admission.
