Collapse Of Iran Nuclear Deal Would Be "Great Loss": UN Watchdog Chief

French Foreign Minister Arrives in Tehran Amid Row Over Ballistic Missile Program

The remarks came as French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, who is on an official visit to Tehran, threatened ahead of the visit that Iran needed to address worldwide concerns over its ballistic missile program or it risked new sanctions.

Shamkhani made the remarks in a meeting with the visiting French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian in the capital Tehran. Le Drian's office says a key part of the trip will be diplomacy over the war in Syria and trying to get Iran to use its influence on Syrian President Bashar Assad to agree to a cease-fire.

Washington put pressure on the European signatories of the agreement to impose some clauses against the Iranian missile program that does not fall within the spirit and letter of the nuclear agreement.

During his visit, Le Drian also inaugurated an exhibition called "The Louvre in Tehran" at the Iranian National Museum.

The interview came on the same day Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - in America for the annual AIPAC conference in Washington, DC - was slated to meet with US President Donald Trump to discuss the JCPOA.

Qassemi blasted attempts to link Iranian missiles to other issues, including the nuclear deal, saying Iran "will not [ask] permission from anyone on how to regulate these policies and will not allow any country to interfere in such issues and Iran's policies and will not hold talks on such cases".

The International Atomic Energy Agency has repeatedly found Iran is abiding by its commitments, which curbs its nuclear programme in exchange for a lifting of international sanctions.

"If the JCPOA were to fail, it would be a great loss for nuclear verification and for multilateralism".

The deal is "international diplomatic achievement", and it should be protected, he stressed.

In his interview, Kamalvandi said that Iran has developed highly advanced centrifuges that are 24 times more powerful than the previous models used.

But the key focus has been the 120-day deadline set by Trump in January for U.S. lawmakers and European allies to "fix" the nuclear deal, removing "sunset clauses" that mean it expires in 2026 and reining in Iran's missile programme and regional activities.

Le Drian said that Paris is determined to implement the JCPOA and has taken many practical measures in this regard.

Any move to undermine the JCPOA would result in the loss of credibility of other worldwide agreements, Shamkhani also made the remarks in a meeting with Le Drian.

Le Drian said that both countries had new plans for boosting cooperation in monetary and banking interactions.
