Justice Department Sues California Over Sanctuary Policies

Trump Administration Sues California Over Sanctuary-State Law

The lawsuit targets three laws in particular: the Immigrant Worker Protection Act (HB 450), the Inspection and Review of Facilities Housing Federal Detainees law (AB 103); and the California Values Act (SB 54).

The nation's top cop spoke at a meeting with the California Peace Officers Association in Sacramento Wednesday.

Sessions and the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit against the state of California over its Sanctuary State status.

The lawsuit is the latest salvo in an escalating feud between the Trump administration and California, which has resisted the president on issues from marijuana policy to climate change and defiantly refuses to help federal agents detain and deport immigrants.

"Immigration law is the province of the federal government", the attorney general said.

Late Tuesday the Justice Department sued to overturn three California statutes that render it more hard for officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) to obtain the cooperation of local officials and private employers to make arrests.

"At a time of unprecedented political turmoil, Jeff Sessions has come to California to further divide and polarize America".

Santa Clara University law professor Pratheepan Gulasekaram argued that the sanctuary state law had a good chance of surviving the federal challenge. Sessions has called it "unconscionable".

"Despite how (De León) has presented the issue, the law enforcement profession, which CPOA represents, can not and does not engage in immigration enforcement".

"We extended an invitation to speak at our event", Leveroni said in a phone interview Tuesday.

California officials remain defiant and say they are on firm legal footing.

"We know the Trump administration is full of liars", Brown said. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has said it will increase its presence in California, and Sessions wants to cut off funding to jurisdictions that won't cooperate.

"Here's my message to Mayor Schaaf: how dare you?". "We're not in the business of deportations".

The lawsuit is also of note because it is the first to place a state against the Justice Department and the DOJ's ongoing behavior in regards to immigration.

"I do think this is pure red meat for the base and I would assume, but this is pure speculation, that Jeff thinks Donald will be happier with him", Brown said in a press conference. "It's not wise, it's not right, and it will not stand", said Governor Jerry Brown.

"Her actions support those who flout the law, and [that] only validates illegality", he said. He said the mayor's alert allowed 800 "criminals" to escape ICE agents during a statewide sweep that netted 232 people.

Dozens of demonstrators have gathered in Sacramento, California, to protest an appearance by U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

He added that "ICE agents do incredible work every day, they're not backing down, they're not going to be deterred, and we're not going to stop enforcing the law in Alabama, or California, either, for that matter".

Nevertheless, Brown warned: "This is basically going to war against the state of California, the engine of the American economy".
