Northern Ireland auto fire no longer thought to be terrorism related

British Army bomb disposal officers are on their way to the scene

An Army bomb disposal team was scrambled to the scene on the A2 between Belast and Bangor at around 8.30am on Tuesday.

The female driver was not injured, but Army Technical Officers are examining the vehicle.

A FEMALE police officer's auto has been set alight in Northern Ireland after a booby trap bomb partially exploded, according to reports.

Speaking in Brussels after meeting the European Union chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, Foster said her thoughts and prayers were with the female PSNI officer and her family.

Police said: 'Shortly before 8.30am police received a report that a vehicle had caught fire at the junction of Ballyrobert Road.

Speculation on whether or not an under-car bomb had been used to target a member of the security forces was rife until the PSNI issued a statement saying the fire had been caused by a mechanical fault.

Police sources had earlier confirmed the woman was not a serving police officer.

Her party colleague and North Antrim MP Ian Paisley said he understood the bomb exploded under the officer's vehicle.

Police refused to comment on the nature of the incident, simply confirming investigations would continue. "Terrorism will never prevail".

"My concern is for the officer and her family".

"If so that's a huge relief and I hope those involved are uninjured".

The main A2 remains closed.
