Australian wicketkeeper accuses South Africans of lying about sledges

David Warner and Quinton de Kock get in a heated exchange during the tea break on day four of the first test at Kingsmead

Warner has accepted a level-two charge by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for conduct "that brings the game into disrepute", copping three demerit points and a heavy fine.

Asked whether there would be talks between the two sides in a bid to reduce hostilities, Lehmann said: "I'm sure the coaches will chat and the captains will chat and we'll get away to play the game".

Match referee Jeff Crowe has had to sift through claim and counter-claim regarding the incident that occurred at tea on day four of the game.

Darren Lehmann has thrown his support behind Warner, declaring both Australia and South Africa will continue to push boundaries but personal sledging has no place on a cricket field.

David Warner could be suspended from the second Test at St George's Park after he and Quinton de Kock were charged by the ICC over their heated stairwell confrontation at Kingsmead.

"What was said and done during that interval was regrettable on both sides", said Australian captain Steve Smith. We want to play a way that gets us success and for us we've just got to make sure we don't cross the line, that's the key.

But however big or small this mess might be‚ the damage to the respectability of the series has been done by security camera footage of Warner spewing what looked like - there is no audio on the video - verbal abuse at De Kock emerged online on Monday.

Former spinner Warne tweeted: "Chat, banter, sledging has always been apart of any series between SA & Oz".

Australian wicketkeeper accuses South Africans of lying about sledges

"Getting personal on the field is not on".

"Correct Warney.but it's clear plenty of personal nonsense has been spoken & the man in question I hear from many has been doing it for a while so I guess someone eventually was going to touch a nerve with a response", he said on Twitter.

Smith's version of events was disputed by South African manager Mohammed Moosajee, who blamed Warner.

"The way they want to play is fiercely competitive on the ground".

Former England test captain Michael Vaughan, however, suggested Warner's rumoured track-record of aggressive sledging means there is no defence for his reaction to de Kock's reported taunt about his wife.

South African captain Faf du Plessis said the umpires needed to ensure proper behaviour on the field. If you start taking strong action like that then you'll get some sanity.

"We play our best cricket when we're aggressive, we're in the fight together, we're hunting as a pack", Smith said.
