Deported Odinga ally slams peacetalks with Uhuru as a betrayal

President Uhuru Kenyatta and NASA leader Raila Odinga

The meeting between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Nasa leader Raila Odinga marked the end of election politics and the beginning of unity, Deputy President William Ruto has said.

The shocking statement is possibly to decrease the political pressure in the richest economy in East Africa as well as the center of regional security, diplomacy and trade.

Earlier on Friday, Kenyatta and Odinga agreed to establish a joint office to thrash out political issues that will lead to reforms.

"We the leaders are summoned to take the front seat and heal the growing ethnic and sectarian strife in the country after every election cycle", Odinga said.

Kenyatta, for his part, said during the meeting that the solid friendship and cooperation that continues to deepen, only serves to encourage Kenya to strengthen its resolve to work together with the US toward an even brighter future, the statement said.

The truce comes months after Kenyans went to two violent elections in the last quarter of 2017.

As Raila Odinga and Uhuru Kenyatta toast, hug and laugh in Nairobi, I remain marooned in Canada because I swore the former in at Uhuru Park on January 30th, 2018.

Political analyst and writer Patrick Gathara said such a dialogue is still needed despite Friday's meeting.

Prominent anti-corruption campaigner John Githongo said it was hard to understand why the meeting happened now and he cautioned that "the devil is in the details".

Mr Miguna said despite Mr Odinga's "betrayal" he will continue fighting for electoral justice.

"We refuse to be the leaders under whose watch Kenyans lead into a failed nation".

"I hope the shaking of hands wasn't a PR prank to hoodwink Kenyans in anticipation of US Secretary of State Rex Tillers on visit".

The senator who is also the senate majority leader however faulted the three Nasa Co-principals - Mr Musalia Mudavadi, Mr Kalonzo Musyoka and Mr Moses Wetang'ula - for complaining that they were not consulted. "They have successfully engineered this", said Aly Khan Satchu, an independent analyst in Nairobi.

That kind of public pressures augurs well for the success of the two leaders' efforts, both of whom made concessions to get the process underway.
