Richard Sherman, San Francisco 49ers to meet today

Richard Sherman thanks Seahawks'Memories to last a lifetime

Sherman turns 30 years old this month and is coming off of two surgeries on each of his Achilles since November - one to replace a tear in his right ankle and the other a minor cleanup in his left - that significantly impacted his play last season.

The Seahawks released Richard Sherman after seven seasons, choosing to cut costs and take the team in a new direction. They're the clear-cut favorites after Sherman reportedly had dinner with 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan Friday night and seem to make all the sense in the world for the ex-Legion of Boom staple. The 49ers have over $60 million in salary cap space after re-signing six players this offseason, including Sherman's former Seahawks teammate Cassius Marsh, a defensive end. While people feel Sherman's skills have diminished a bit lately, he tweeted out some interesting statistics from last season after being released.

Four of Sherman's interceptions have come against the 49ers, and he was a headliner of a vaunted defense that's keyed Seattle's nine-game winning streak over their NFC West foes. Also pursuing Sherman are the Green Bay Packers, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Houston Texans, Tennessee Titans and Detroit Lions.

Sherman was an overlooked fifth-round draft pick who went on to become a two-time All-Pro who helped anchor a defence that was the league's best for several years.

If Sherman and the 49ers can't work out a deal on Saturday, then we'll likely see the Richard Sherman free agency tour go into full swing over the next few weeks.

Of course, the 49ers are only going to sign Sherman if they're satisfied with his health and there's no guarantee that's going to happen. And Schefter says it's possible that Sherman, who grew up in California, will stay in the area after his visit.
