Erdogan censures North Atlantic Treaty Organisation for not helpimg in Turkey's Syria operations

Footage emerges of clashes between TAF FSA and PYD YPG in Syria’s Jindaris

Ankara launched the offensive on January 20, with the aim of dislodging the People's Protection Units (YPG), a US -backed Kurdish militia that Turkey considers to be a terrorist group.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has made the nationalist "grey wolf" sign during a Justice and Development party rally in the southern province of Mersin, reports said.

The president also said that an area of over "900 square kilometers" has been brought under control by the Free Syrian Army (FSA) and the Turkish Armed Forces, as they press on to take the center of Afrin city. More than one million people are now in Afrin city and villages around it after fleeing the fighting, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor group.

Erdogan said on Sunday Turkish troops and allied Syrian rebels were now just four to five kilometres from Afrin.

"Of course, Turkey will not permit this", Ramazani said.

"During this operation, we see that Turkey is lending a hand to the oppressed", Tasli said. "Once Afrin is captured, it will be delivered to its true owners", said Erdoğan.

In a statement to the UN Security Council, the Kurdish council that governs Afrin on Sunday demanded a response to the Turkish offensive. AP reported Erdogan accused the alliance of double standards.

Managing alliances in Syria has always been a struggle for the United States, as underscored by how often two US-armed allies end up directly fighting one another. Unfortunately, until now, there has not been a positive word or voice.

The US, who has supported the YPG in its campaign to defeat the Islamic State in Syria, does not agree with Ankara's designation and has called on Turkey to limit its operations. "Are we not a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation member?"

The YPG too denies any direct organisational links to Turkey's PKK- an assertion backed by a US -led coalition whose air strikes have helped the militia and allied Arab fighters drive Islamic State militants out of tens of thousands of square kilometres of Syria.
