Lions sign RB LeGarrette Blount

The Patriots ran through the schedule during the back half of the campaign, though the postseason run came to an end with a Super Bowl loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. Detroit also re-signed reserve back Zach Zenner on Friday.

LeGarrette Blount has agreed to a one-year deal with Detroit for $4.5 million, according to NFL Media's Ian Rapoport. The moves reunites Blount with current Lions coach and former Patriots defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.

The Detroit Lions were in the market for a running back, and it looks like they've found their man. The Lions have gone four-plus seasons without a 100-yard rusher in a game, dating back to 2013.

What does Blount bring to the Lions?

The 31-year old joins an inconsistent backfield that includes Ameer Abdullah, Theo Riddick and Dwayne Washington. Blount is immediately the most accomplished of the bunch. With Blount, he has a beastly running back to use in certain situations and adds a variable he hasn't had before to his arsenal. Hill, a product of LSU, rushed for only 3.1 yards per carry a season ago.

Blount has always been much quicker than his 250-pound frame suggests, but his bruising running style was always a bit of an insurance policy to the step-sapping slowness that encroaches with age.

It makes sense. Honestly, I can't remember the last time the Lions had a big back.

He's also durable; in the last five seasons, he's only missed three games due to injury. But can the team rely on Pumphrey or Smallwood to produce in a limited - yet important - role week in and week out?

Blount has 51 career rushing touchdowns in eight National Football League seasons.
