29th Street Officer-Involved Shooting

California mayor 'horrified' by video of fatal shooting; police fired 20 rounds at unarmed man

Protests erupted in Sacramento four days after Stephon Clark, an unarmed black man, was shot by police in his grandmother's backyard.

The shooting sparked an outcry in the city, bringing protesters to the Golden 1 Center, where the Sacramento Kings defeated the Atlanta Hawks in a almost empty arena.

As protesters gathered outside the arena, they locked hands and barred fans from entering. The basketball teams began the game almost a half-hour late in a mostly empty Golden 1 Center.

The incident began on Sunday after 9 p.m., when Sacramento officers responded to a report that a man had broken auto windows and was hiding in a backyard.

Sacramento police officers shot and killed Clark Sunday night.

More than five minutes after the final shot was sacked and Clark's motionless body lay on the ground, the same female officer says, "Let's have the next unit just bring a non-lethal in case he's pretending".

Police have said the officers who fired multiple shots at Clark believed he had a gun. During an interview with Beth Ruyak, the chief discussed the Clark shooting and said that he never possessed a firearm. "Gun, gun, gun", one of the officers yells before they begin shooting. Police had been called to check reports of someone breaking into cars.

Massive protests broke out at City Hall after news of the shooting, delaying a National Basketball Association game for the Sacramento Kings.

At other points, protesters surrounded Sacramento police officers and delayed public transportation.

"What happened was absolutely horrific and we are so very sorry, so very sorry for your loss", he added.

Protesters twice tried to get on I-5 on Friday night but were blocked by California Highway Patrol officers wearing helmets.

The officers can be seen encountering Clark and pursuing him into a backyard.

Footage from body cameras and an overhead helicopter does not clearly depict what Clark was doing just before police opened fire.

The police said deputies in the helicopter saw Mr Clark break a neighbour's sliding glass door before jumping over a fence.

"Show me your hands!" one of the officers yelled.

Clark was suspected of breaking into cars in a South Sacramento neighborhood.

He praised Mr Hahn for quickly releasing videos of the shooting and said the department has improved its policies since the fatal shooting of a mentally ill black man in 2016.

The two officers involved in the shooting have not been named; both have been placed on paid administrative leave.

Sacramento police and the president of the Sacramento Police Officers Association could not be reached on Friday.

"(Mr Clark) turned and advanced towards the officers while holding an object which was extended in front of him", he told the Sacramento Bee.

The tragedy is yet another example of "police using excessive force in the wrongful death of an unarmed black man", according to Crump. Media outlets have reported this as an official police statement, in addition to the news that Clark allegedly broke a window with a "tool bar" minutes before the shooting.
