Palestinian teen filmed slapping an Israeli soldier gets eight months in jail

Ahed Tamimi

"The fact that a child will be jailed for 8 months for slapping a soldier whose troops just shot her 15 year old cousin in the face is extreme, but in the context of the 99% conviction rate in the Israeli military court system and right-wing incitement against Ahed, this compromise by the Israeli military shows they have chose to back down in the face of growing pressure to release Ahed", the statement said.

Tamimi's lawyer, Gaby Lasky, said Tamimi agreed to the sentence as part of a plea deal with prosecutors that allowed her to avoid more serious charges that could have imprisoned her for years.

"There is no justice under the occupation and this court is illegal", the teen reportedly told the courtroom.

The Israeli army said in a statement after the sentence that it 'will continue operating in order to preserve the security and public order in (the West Bank) and enforce the law as it pertains to anyone who harms soldiers and incites violence'.

In 2012, Istanbul's Basaksehir Municipality granted Ahed the prestigious Hanzala Courage Award for defying Israeli soldiers who had just arrested her brother.

Palestinians have embraced her as a symbol of a new generation fighting Israel.

Ahed Tamimi, the Arab teen who gained notoriety when her mother streamed a video on Facebook showing her slapping, shoving and kicking Israeli soldiers went viral, accepted a plea bargain that includes an eight-month prison stint and a 5,000-shekel fine.

Wikipedia defines her as "a Palestinian activist" in the "occupied West Bank". She hit one of them in the face hours after she found out Israeli troops had shot her 15-year-old cousin to death, in the head with a rubber bullet, shattering his skull, in response to stones being thrown nearby.

Since her arrest, Ahed has become the subject of dozens of solidarity campaigns across the world demanding her release from Israeli prison, and an end to Israeli detention of Palestinian children.

"The trial was a show trial, because clearly we have a case here where the whole military system mobilized against a young girl who was only 16 when she was arrested", Lasky emphasized.

"When they chose to keep her trial behind closed doors, we knew that we were not going to get a fair trial", Lasky told AFP in describing her reasons for seeking a plea bargain. Nariman Tamimi was arrested later that day, while Ahed's cousin, Nour Tamimi, was arrested the following morning. The Tamimi family are among villagers who fight for their land rights with Israeli settlers.

Ahed Tamimi is the more aggressive of the two in the video. Ahed and her mother manager to pull the soldier of her brother and free him.

The scuffle took place amid clashes and protests against US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital.
