Telangana: Ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi wins all three Rajya Sabha seats

'Antaratma ki awaaz!' BSP MLA votes for BJP in Rajya Sabha polls

The biggest loser from Uttar Pradesh is the Samajwadi Party (SP), which had six out of the 10 Rajya Sabha seats that went to polls.

Thirty-three candidates from ten States, including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Odisha had already been declared elected unopposed on March 15.

Voting for the 25 Rajya Sabha seats began on Friday across five states-Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh and Telangana.

In Jharkhand, too, where voting took place for two seats, the BJP had to be content with one seat despite the fact it went all out to land the second seat.

The BJP's win comes days after it lost the Gorakhpur and Phulpur Lok Sabha bypolls to the SP - supported by the BSP.

Of the 40 JD-S members, seven rebel legislators voted for the Congress, making its third candidate (Chandrasekhar) get 46 votes. - We have just come to know that the CM is in contact with the Returning Officer, who is being forced to bring the result in the favor of BJP.

There were 11 candidates in fray.

In the 225-member state legislative assembly, including one nominated, the Congress has 122 legislators, BJP 48, JD-S 40 and seven are vacant.

Other candidates, including SP's actor-turned- politician Jaya Bachchan won with the help of first preference votes. Arithmetically, the BJP can easily win eight of the 10 seats and will be left with 28 surplus votes.

Speaking about her deal with the SP, she said that the BSP had joined hands with the Akhilesh Yadav led party so that the elections do not lose their significance. "It was also tried to make an effort to ensure that this election does not become a blot on the face of democracy", Mayawati added.

After declaration of the results late night Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said that he was thankful to all those who supported BJP candidates. "BSP candidate Bhimrao Ambedkar got all the votes as well as one vote extra", Misra said. Janata Dal has boycotted the voting now, so that will also enhance our chances of victory: G. Parameshwara, Congress - Counting halted in UP: BSP files complaint with EC saying MLAs Nitin Agarwal and Anil Singh did not show votes to polling agents before casting their vote.

Though the BJP has a huge majority in the Lok Sabha, many crucial bills have been stalled in the House because of the lack of numbers in Rajya Sabha. The vacancy for the lone Rajya Sabha seat arose when JD (U) leader Mr. Veerendrakumar resigned his seat in December last after Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar made a decision to join the NDA bandwagon. Lingaiah Yadav said the Chief Minister has not only empowered the Yadav community financially with sheep distribution scheme, but now sent them to Rajya Sabha.

Besides BJP's prominent victor Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, others who made it to the Upper House of Parliament from the party are Ashok Bajpai, Vijay Pal Singh Tomar, Sakal Deep Rajbhar, Kanta Kardam, Anil Jain, Harnath Singh Yadav, GVL Narasimha Rao and ninth candidate Anil Kumar Agarwal, who pulled off a surpise win with the help of second preference votes.

The tribal dominated state's ruling BJP won the lone seat. Meanwhile, extending their best wishes to Saroj Pandey, BJP Legislators Tokhanlal Sahu, Chunnilal Sahu and Khilawan Sahu have stated that the Congress by raking up caste issue in this election has tried to pollute the environment in the state.

The need for an election arose as the Congress fielded a candidate despite the TRS having 98 MLAs to win all three seats in the 119 member assembly with the support of Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (MIM).
