Organizers expecting big crowd for gun violence march

The Woodland Hills Students Against Gun Violence put up posters throughout the halls of their high school

"We live in fear", the March For Our Lives mission statement says.

The demonstration, which is part of a national movement in cities across the US, is starting at the Smith Center.

Kilmurray said she and others of her generation are exhausted of one deadly school shooting after another without any action to prevent more.

On Friday, President Trump ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to issue a new rule banning the use of bump stocks, which are generally used to modify semi-automatic weapons so that they can fire more rapidly.

White House deputy press secretary Lindsay Walters said the administration applauded 'the many courageous young Americans exercising their free-speech rights yesterday.

"It's pretty simple for me", said Zoe Tate, 11, from Gaithersburg Middle School in Maryland, explaining why she marched in Washington.

Marchers plan to make their way from Jack Poole Plaza past the US Consulate.

'You can't just stand silently and watch your neighbour go through a crisis like this, ' says organizer Protesters gathered at Jack Poole Plaza in downtown Vancouver to rally against gun violence.

"They feel the need to make a difference and because of that, Saturday's march becomes an opportunity for their activism to impact their parents and relatives, whether they themselves turn out to the polls or not".

"[Through] the forms of gang violence and there's guns that are being held by children everyday in Canada, in Vancouver, in our province of BC", she explains. "It was very anxiety-raising", she said, recalling how students and staff had to shelter in place.

The survivors of the Florida shooting "have created a movement that is going to shift the conversation on gun violence", Gonzalez said.

The possible planned shooting at Memorial also furthered Knight's resolve to march today, she said.

Organizers hope the passions of the crowds and the under-18 roster of speakers will translate into a tipping point starting with the midterm congressional elections this fall.

Federal agents and D.C. police will be deployed to provide security for the crowd, which is expected to equal the size of the Women's March a year ago and the Obama presidential inaugurations.

A counter-protest in support of gun rights will be held 5 p.m.at the Killeen Community Center. The opening day of that festival was moved from Saturday to Sunday to help avoid congestion that could overwhelm public transportation and roadways.
