Students speak out at 'March for Our Lives'

David Hogg and other students from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School walk out of school to honor the memories of 17 classmates and teachers that were killed during a mass shooting at the school

Dressed conspicuously in neon orange "March for Our Lives" sweatshirts, the girls, who attend Half Hollow Hills High School West, said something must change, and they are standing in unity with students across the country to agitate for it. "It's as simple as that". The absence of these kids, victims of gun-violence, was felt and it was deafening.

The peak crowd size was 202,796 people, with a margin of error of 15 percent, the firm said.

"When you see kids getting that involved as a parent you'll do anything to support them, and for all the kids who died and for all the kids who hopefully won't".

Ellen Gozansky Malka, a Montrealer now living in Parkland, told the crowd that two of her children were at the school during the shooting and saw things no child should see.

"I don't really now how to put into words what it felt like", said Madelynn Dittman, an 18-year-old senior at Stoneman Douglas, describing the day a gunman killed 14 of her classmates and three adults.

Images of the massive turnout at marches in Washington, D.C., and elsewhere "shows what an impact we've made on the whole world, " junior Alejandra Martinez said.

Saturday, these students are joining thousands of other young people to rally for greater gun restrictions, an event certain to be boisterous and loud. "I feel it's important to support them".

She's hoping the amount of people registering to vote at these marches is what leads to the change she says is badly needed in gun legislation. "We stand with them united in this mission to end gun violence", Anil Rohira, one of the conveners told ANI. "It's scary enough with the security guards we have in school", she said. She recalled the "bodies in that building waiting to be identified for over a day", and the confusion that swirled as the victims "stopped breathing long before any of us had even known that a Code Red had been called".

Around the country, protesters complained that they are scared of getting shot in school and exhausted of inaction by grown-ups after a series of mass shootings.

The marches in Washington and across the U.S. were spearheaded by survivors of the Parkland shooting, many of whom were in the nation's capital yesterday.

After helping to organize the walkout at their school earlier this month, Perles and her friend Ryan Dowling, 17, of Northport, said they had to do more.

"I shouldn't have to worry about dying today", said Eden, one of eight student speakers.

The walkout was inspiring, Perles said. "So far, I've registered about 10 people myself and there's about a thousand of us volunteers out today". "I don't want to go back and be afraid I could get killed".

Student protesters called for a ban on high-capacity magazines and assault-type weapons like the one used by the killer in Parkland, comprehensive background checks, and a higher minimum age to buy guns.
