YouTube has banned videos that promote gun mods and bump stocks

YouTube Simplifies Livestreaming Process From Computers Webcams And Android Camera Apps

YouTube will begin banning videos that are created to sell firearms and certain accessories such as bump stocks and other gun modifiers that allow semiautomatic weapons to fire faster, it said this week.

The company rolled out new guidelines Monday banning content that shows how to assemble or manufacture "a firearm, ammunition, high capacity magazine, homemade silencers/suppressors, or certain firearms accessories".

YouTube has been unapologetic in its response, issuing a statement to Bloomberg that it "routinely makes updates and adjustments" on website policy.

On the other hand, the National Shooting Sports Foundation, a gun industry lobbying group, called YouTube's new policy "worrisome".

Lyor Cohen, YouTube's head of music, told Bloomberg that the ad campaign will primarily target people who mostly use YouTube as a music service.

YouTube plans a significant marketing campaign to back the new paid service, Cohen said.

InRange TV posted that "YouTube's newly-released vague and one-sided firearms policy makes it abundantly clear that YouTube can not be counted upon to be a safe harbor for a wide variety of views and subject matter". Videos showing installation of accessories will also be banned.

YouTube isn't the only company that has worked on changed since the Parkland shooting, as it now joins Walmart and Dick's Sporting Goods in placing new sales and promotion restrictions regarding guns.

But it turns out, Spike's Tactical isn't alone and a number of firearms companies and channels owned by Second Amendment enthusiasts have been banned.

InRange TV, a dedicated firearm channel, announced on Facebook they would be uploading their videos to the popular adult content site PornHub.

YouTube Red, Google's premium online video platform, is heavily investing in original content as well much like other players in this space which includes behemoths like Netflix, Apple, and Amazon.

"We see the real potential for the blocking of educational content that serves instructional, skill-building and even safety purposes", it said in a statement. YouTube says it will also allow live streaming directly from the camera app on select devices from Asus, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and more in the coming months.

Though it's listed among racier clips common to a porn site, the video appears exactly as it does on YouTube.

The decision to increase restrictions on gun videos comes after 17 people were killed on February 14 in the Parkland, Fla., school shooting.
