Michigan State dean accused of storing nude photos

If Strampel fired Nassar over the actual assault itself, his comments to a group of students in October of 2016 after Nassar was sacked certainly did not show that.

"Interim President John Engler has felt like this is someone who doesn't carry forth the values of the university going forward, and this conduct is not going to be tolerated", university spokeswoman Emily Guerrant said Monday night. The charges carry sentences of one, two and up to five years in prison, respectively.

More than 250 girls and women have sued Michigan State, current and former university officials, USA Gymnastics - where Nassar also worked - and others.

Nassar received two prison sentences in MI of 40 to 125 years and 40 to 175 years for molesting female athletes under the guise of medical treatment.

In March 2017, in an interview with a Michigan State police officer and an Federal Bureau of Investigation agent re-examining the 2014 case, Strampel conceded he never followed up to ensure Nassar was adhering to the rules he put in place in July 2014.

That investigation concluded in three months and found that Thomashow, then a recent MSU graduate, likely misinterpreted what Nassar did as sexual assault because she didn't understand the "nuanced difference" between that and osteopathic medical procedures.

Strampel also did not gain compliance from Nassar on protocols the two put in place after a Title IX investigation that cleared the latter of sexual assault investigations in 2014. The MSU Police Department led the investigations. Several women say they were abused by Nassar during that time frame. In letting Nassar resume seeing patients, he also said any skin-to-skin contact should be minimal and needed to be explained in detail.

Strampel told police previous year he never followed up after ordering Nassar in 2014 to have a third person present when providing treatment to "anything close to a sensitive area".

In September of 2016 when Rachael Denhollander became the first woman to publicly accuse Nassar of sexual assault by telling her story to The Indianapolis Star, reporter Tim Evans emailed Nassar, telling him that he had to ask him some questions. The woman later went on and told police that she never reported the incident at the time because she was afraid she would be removed from the school.

Charges against Strampel have not been disclosed. Amid intense criticism over its handling of the Nassar case, former Michigan State President Lou Anna Simon and former Michigan State Athletic Director Mark Hollis stepped down from their positions earlier this year.

"Good luck. I am on your side."

"Is this the right way to handle disclosures of abuse on MSU's campus?"

While the sheriff did not say why Strampel was arrested, Michigan State said last month that it had begun the process of revoking his tenure, linking the move to the Nassar abuse.
