Louisiana AG expected to announce charges in Alton Sterling case

A Decision On Police Indictments Has Taken A Frustratingly Long Time In Alton Sterling's Case

Once confronted, the police officers determined that Sterling was in possession of a "firearm in his right front pocket" of a shirt he was wearing, Landry said.

BATON ROUGE, La. - Louisiana's attorney general ruled out criminal charges Tuesday against two white Baton Rouge police officers in the fatal shooting of a black man during a struggle outside a convenience store.

Alton Sterling's aunt, Sandra Sterling who suffered two strokes since Alton Sterling's death, said she will not support Jeff Landry after his announcement this morning. They said Salamoni yelled that Sterling was reaching for a gun in his pocket before shooting him three times, and then fired three more shots into Sterling's back when he began to sit up and move.

"I know the Sterling family is hurting and I know they may not agree with this decision", Landry said.

Landry said the police officers "used verbal commands" and "several non-lethal techniques to gain control of Mr".

Police shot Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, six times during the July 2016 incident.

"Our investigation has concluded that officers Lake and Salamoni attempted to make a lawful arrest of Alton Sterling based upon probable cause", Landry told a news conference.

Landry said his office reviewed all of the evidence compiled by the Justice Department, including opinions issued by independent experts, and also conducted its own interviews of eyewitnesses to the shooting.

During a 10-month probe, Federal Bureau of Investigation agents and prosecutors reviewed images of the incident captured by body cameras, mobile phones and store surveillance cameras as well as witness accounts and other evidence.

Sterling's five children also filed a wrongful-death lawsuit against the officers a year ago.

"We owe this final review to the Baton Rouge community and the Sterling family", he said in a statement. On July 5, 2016, Salamoni and Lake responded to a 911 call claiming that a man with a gun was threatening people outside of the Triple S Food Mart.

However, attorneys L. Chris Stewart and Brandon DeCuir, who represent Alton Sterling's five children, say Landry is to meet beforehand Tuesday morning with relatives of the slain main. The Baton Roug cops who killed Alton Sterling will not be charged.

"The people of this parish have been civil in their reaction to a long and frustrating process from federal and state authorities and now of course citizens of this parish have every right to peacefully and publicly protest", she said. When he did not, a struggle ensued with Salamoni pulling out his gun and pointing it at Sterling's head and later Lake attempting to shoot Sterling with a Taser. According to the attorney general's report, Sterling refused orders to put his hands on the hood of a auto, and officers wrestled him to the ground.

Salamoni and Lake are on paid administrative leave.

The Baton Rouge Department has not yet announced the outcome of its internal affairs investigation which could include disciplinary action for the officers. A day after Sterling's death prompted outrage and protests, an officer in Minnesota shot and killed Philando Castile, a school cafeteria worker, during a traffic stop, the aftermath of which was streamed live on Facebook.
