United States male arrested in connection to suspicious packages

Fort Belvoir is roughly 23 miles from Washington

A man has been arrested in Washington State, after he was suspected of sending suspicious packages to multiple military installations in the Washington, D.C., region on Monday, according to a USA law enforcement official.

Michael Howard, an Army spokesman, confirmed reports that one of the suspicious packages was sent to National Defense University at Fort McNair around 8:30 a.m. Monday. In particular, the package that which arrived at the National Defense University at Fort McNair in D.C held black powder, residue, GPS, and a fuse (according to CNN), although it was eventually rendered safe. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the packages had contained explosive components such as fuse attachments, Global Positioning System locators, and black powder.

The package was later rendered safe, Army officials told the news channel.

"It is possible that further packages were mailed to additional mail processing facilities in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area", the Federal Bureau of Investigation said.

An Everett man was taken into custody in connection with suspicious packages discovered at military bases near Washington D.C., CBS News reports.

The FBI is examining all of the packages. A fifth person suffered minor injuries when a package bomb exploded at a FedEx facility.

It was not clear what led authorities to deem the packages suspicious.

All of the packages differed, although some of them included "disturbing" and rambling letters, and some of them held components used to make explosives. That package was mailed from Austin, linking it to the serial bomber.

In the statement, Army Lt. Col. Michelle Baldanza said "this incident is now under investigation".

"We are tracking the delivery of suspicious packages to multiple military installations in the National Capital Region", a Department of Defense spokesperson said in a statement.
