Assange said to have lost internet access and right to receive visitors

Ecuadoran Embassy in London cuts off Julian Assange's Internet

Julian Assange's contact with the outside world was cut off on Wednesday after the Ecuadorean embassy in which he is staying decided that he had breached the terms of his stay by commenting on the UK-Russia dispute over a poisoned ex-spy.

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange speaks on the balcony of the Embassy of Ecuador in London Thomson Reuters QUITO (Reuters) - Ecuador has suspended WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange's communication system after he discussed on social media issues that could damage Ecuador's diplomatic relations, the government said on Wednesday.

Ecuador did not reveal which of Assange's recent communications was the reason for cutting off his access to the internet and social media.

In 2016, Ecuador briefly suspended his internet connection for posting documents online that were seen as having an impact on the USA presidential election from which Donald Trump emerged the victor.

Assange has been holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London since 2012, where he went to elude arrest by Swedish authorities who wanted to question him on sexual assault allegations. Sweden dropped the case, but Mr Assange remains subject to arrest in Britain for jumping bail.

Ecuador has repeatedly urged Assange not to interfere in the affairs of other countries following his frequent online comments on worldwide issues. Assange has lived in the Ecuadorian embassy in London for six years. Assange later taunted after Lasso's loss that he would "cordially invite Lasso to leave Ecuador within 30 days".

British Foreign Office minister Alan Duncan on Tuesday said it was time "that this miserable little worm walked out of the embassy and gave himself up to British justice". But Assange is not in the clear, as NPR's Colin Dwyer reported, because there is still an outstanding arrest warrant for him in the United Kingdom for "failing to surrender in court".

The Ecuadorian embassy said it had revoked Assange's access after he violated a promise not to say (or tweet) anything that would harm the South American nation's relations with the UK.

Former president Rafael Correa hailed Mr Assange's work but the nation's current head of state has called him a hacker and warned him not to meddle in politics.

"This decision was taken due to Assange's failure to commit to the written agreement he agreed with the government at the end of 2017, where he was obligated not to release any messages that would interfere with other countries' matters", it continues.
