Driver attempts to run over soldiers in France

BREAKING: Manhunt as car tries to PLOUGH into soldiers outside army barracks

French police are hunting for a driver who tried to run over several soldiers outside an army base in southeast France.

The incident in which a man was arrested by French police on Thursday after driving a stolen auto at a group of soldiers jogging outside their base near in the foothills of the Alps was not terrorism related, a local prosecutor said. No one was hurt in the incident.

France had been in the state of emergency since the 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris, which was lifted in Novembe 2017.

No injuries to the soldiers were reported, and it was not immediately known why the alleged attacker, unidentified as of Thursday afternoon, went after them during a morning jog near their base.

A spokesman for the army's land regiments in the region said soldiers had told police the driver had shouted abuse in Arabic as he first passed them.

The soldiers dived into a ditch to avoid the oncoming vehicle, reportedly stolen and driven by a male who did not stop.

If confirmed to be a deliberate act, it would not be the first time an assailant has used a vehicle to target members of the security forces in France.

According to witnesses, the driver "insulted" the soldiers before fleeing.

Members of the 93rd mountain artillery regiment were jogging near their barracks in the alpine town of Varces-Allières-et-Risset when the man drove a stolen auto at them, forcing the soldiers to dive out of the way, the BBC reported.

A source close to the investigation said the driver's motivations remained unclear but that the incident was being taken seriously.

He then drove 15 minutes to Trebes, in the southern France where he took hostages in a supermarket. The gendarme was killed by the Moroccan-born assailant.
