Miami Open: Venus Williams knocked out by qualifier Danielle Collins

Qualifier Danielle Collins stuns idol Venus Williams to reach Miami Open semis

French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko will meet US Open champion Sloane Stephens in the Miami Open final after putting a decisive end to American qualifier Danielle Collins' dream run.

Danielle Collins produced the performance of a lifetime and pulled off an almighty shock at the Miami Open tennis tournament on Wednesday, sending Venus Williams crashing out 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semi-finals.

"I obviously have an incredible amount of respect for Venus, but you kind of have to take the name out of it and just focus on the tennis part and play one point at a time and use your tactics that you come up with your coaches", said Collins. "She has been my favourite player so I am finding it hard to wrap my head around this".

It is easy to smile about the good times again, now that Stephens, who defeated the former No. 1 Victoria Azarenka on Thursday to reach the Miami final, is having her best tournament in months. "In the very first set I was down however that I fought thus that I knew basically did this at the second, I'd be right within", the 25-year-old American explained in a on-court job interview. "I had a lot of errors, but I didn't feel like I was just not in the match".

"I just knew I had to keep fighting".

The leader among the semifinalists for aces, first-serve points, and service games won before the match, Collins failed to rely on her supposed strength, simply because Ostapenko used her serve more consistently to take the initiative.

"Like I said, I tried to win the match".

Her opponent Collins came into the matchup having already played nearly 12 hours of tennis in Miami alone, battling through two rounds of qualifying to bring her total of matches to seven.

Collins topped US Open finalist Madison Keys earlier this month at Indian Wells and made a much bigger statement with this win. I've been playing tennis in Key Biscayne since I was 11 years old.

Collins confirmed an unexpected composure for a player who has just started her WTA career after the college years and a 2017 season spent in the ITF events.

Collins and Ostapenko have never played a professional match against each other, but did contest a junior match in 2011.

"I was hurting a little bit today, but it was on and off all the time", Svitolina said afterwards.
