Iridium satellites successfully launched in one rocket

Homemade Rocket

A SpaceX Falcon 9 launcher rocketed into orbit Friday from Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, climbing away from a hillside launch complex just after sunrise with 10 Iridium communications satellites. Iridium confirmed shortly before noon that all 10 satellites had reached orbit and transmitted signals.

Iridium has announced that all 10 new satellites have successfully communicated with the Iridium Satellite Network Operations Center and are preparing to begin testing.

The contract calls for SpaceX to launch a total of 75 satellites for Iridium.

The Iridium-5 NEXT Mission marked the fifth set of 10 satellites that Musk's SpaceX has launched for its customer's Iridium NEXT global satellite constellation.

The Falcon 9's first stage was previously launched on an Iridium mission last October and was recovered.

Today's planned launch is the first of two planned by SpaceX in the next four days. As SpaceX brings about a new variation of the Falcon 9 booster, known as "Block 5", older models are being discarded through expendable missions. The mobile voice and data communications company's final launches of this $3 billion satellite replacement project are expected to happen by the end of 2018.

Friday's launch brings to 50 the number of Iridium Next satellites in orbit. Since the older satellites had overperformed excessively, Iridium made a decision to invest a fortune of $3 billion to upgrade its services and increase subscribers base and to offer seamless and uninterrupted data, voice, and other services unlike others falling to meet the needs of the customers. Once complete, the constellation will consist of 66 active satellites, nine orbiting spares and six ground spares.

In one departure from typical SpaceX launches, the company cut the live video feed from the Falcon 9 second stage about 9 minutes into the flight.

This time too, Mr. Steven was unable to catch the bulbous nose cone when it splashed into the Ocean at the speed eight times greater than the speed of sound.

The rocket lifted off at 7:13 a.m. PT Friday and arced over the Pacific west of Los Angeles.

SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said on Twitter the fairing "impacted water at high speed", without confirming explicitly if the landing was successful or not.

Musk said SpaceX will conduct helicopter drop tests with payload fairings in the coming weeks to improve recovery efforts.
