"'Condom snorting challenge'" Experts warn teens not to inhale condoms

It may sound like a "Mad Libs" version of a '90s after-school special, but it is actually happening: Teenagers are snorting condoms on the internet. It led to pneumonia and caused the right upper lobe of her lung to collapse. A condom, comprised of latex, rubber and covered in spermicide, can damage the inner lining of the nose. When not promptly and properly treated, according to the Mayo Clinic, the appendix can rupture.

Even in a best-case scenario where someone ingests a condom and then manages to pull it out of their mouth without choking, getting it stuck, or accidentally swallowing the roughly seven-and-a-half inch piece of plastic, it's not a harmless prank. Texas education specialist Stephen Enriquez told Fox News affiliate KABB-TV that these bad decisions were fueled by a desire to get more views and likes on social media.

For some, yes. That's why health experts are warning parents about such social media challenges.

In the viral videos, social media users put an unwrapped condom in one of their nostrils and inhale, until the condom comes back out of their mouths.

There is a new internet challenge that has some parents on alert and just about everyone asking questions.

Many of these challenges are done for likes, clicks, shares, and attention.

The idea of threading a condom through your nose and pulling it from your mouth is not new.

In numerous videos, you can see pain on the faces of those who take part in the "condom snorting challenge". YouTube has since removed that video, but a summary from The Young Turks can be viewed below.

The condom challenge went viral for the first time in 2013, when another YouTuber, Savannah Strong, filmed a video of herself doing the same thing while the song "22" by Taylor Swift played in the background. That stunt, dubbed "The Tide Pod Challenge", resulted in poison centers reporting 142 incidents just in January, according to the American Association of Poison Control Centers (AAPCC).
