Kim Jong-un watches K-pop stars perform in Pyongyang

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and wife Ri Sol Ju and Chinese President Xi Jinping and wife Peng Liyuan pose for

The concert went ahead at the elaborately decorated 1,500-seat East Pyongyang Grand Theatre.

In addition to the concert, a team of South Korean taekwondo demonstrators performed on Sunday at the Pyongyang Taekwondo Hall, drawing more than 2300 North Koreans, including Choe Hwi, chairman of the National Sports Guidance Committee.

In the past, South Korea's popular music, known as K-pop, didn't find a great deal of love in Pyongyang. "The North Koreans talked about that hair and said that he could not perform with it.it wasn't easy from the beginning!"

"There were more applause than we expected so we could relax and continue with our performance", Yeri, a member of Red Velvet, told South Korean reporters after the concert. Kim praised the group, who has more than 4.6 million Instagram followers, for their wonderful performance as well as asked the art troupe, which consists of 160 members from different entertainment field, to extend his appreciation to South Korean President Moon Jae-in for a wonderful concert.

Kim Jong Un, who was accompanied by his wife at the concert, "was deeply moved to see our people sincerely acclaiming the performance, deepening the understanding of the popular art of the south side", according to North Korea state news agency KCNA. Baik Tae-hyun, spokesman of the Unification Ministry, said Monday that the South Korean government was unaware exactly what Kim was referring to.

All of that is leading up to a May meeting between President Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un. I had initially planned to attend a performance the day after tomorrow but I came here today after adjusting my schedule.

The delegation, which combines K-pop, rock and other genres, is set to perform again on Tuesday.

It was the first time a North Korean leader had attended a South Korean performance in the North's capital.

In 2003, North Korea withdrew from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and threatened to test atomic weapons.

The show's lineup also included a variety of slow-tempo songs that were chosen to please the North Korean audience.

Full video of their and other South Korean singers' performances wasn't immediately available.

"North Korea is still very conservative about men singing and dancing", said Philo Kim, a professor at the Institute for Peace and Unification Studies in Seoul.

Seohyun, a female vocalist and actress, sang a North Korean pop song called "Blue Willow Tree".

Sunday's concert, entitled "Spring Comes", was a reciprocation for two performances by North Korea's Samjiyon Orchestra in February on the eve of the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in Gangneung, Gangwon, and during the Games in Seoul.

"When such good atmosphere is preserved carefully and continuously, only the handsome spring when new buds sprout and flowers blossom and the rich autumn when the crops are abundant will always be in the way of our fellow countrymen", Kim said, according to North Korean media.

But the images of the North Korean dictator laughing and speaking with the young South Korean pop stars and applauding from his private booth was a stark contrast to defector reports claiming that Kim has overseen a huge crackdown on foreign media, which he views as a threat to his regime.
